Book Club Politics and Literature: Novels for the New Century | Deniz Ohde: Streulicht

Caponeu event

18.03.2024 - 18.03.2024

The discussion revisited the theme of class, which was at the heart of the book. Interestingly, the other intersectional aspects (gender, migration) were somewhat less important in the discussion this time, although they were covered quite heavily in the book. Perhaps the most interesting aspects of the discussion were: i) that the topic of rising from the working class through education was also personally contextualized briefly by some of the participants, ii) that, as mentioned, the intersectional specificity of the novel's narrator played a minor role in the debate (why?), and iii) that there were very different views on the relationship between father and narrator, i.e. with regard to the end of the novel and to what extent  a caring/loving relationship is depicted, and that, however, due to a partly traumatic family history such closeness cannot be articulated verbally. Overall, both the participants and the organizers found the meeting very pleasant. There also seems to have been an atmosphere in which people could at least briefly talk about one's own family background in relation to the novel.
